RESPONSIBILITIES
The Refrigeration Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems on board together with The Chief Refrigeration Engineer, working in close cooperation with Assistant Refrigeration Engineer. The role requires a balance of technical expertise, safety awareness, and guest-facing professionalism, ensuring reliable climate control, food preservation systems and Technical Ventilation while supporting the overall standard of excellence on board.
The responsibilities of the Refrigeration Engineer will include, but not be limited to:
Operational Duties
- Maintain and service shipboard refrigeration and HVAC systems in cooperation with the Chief Refrigeration Engineer.
- Attend daily morning meetings to coordinate and prioritize daily duties.
- Provide professional, efficient and courteous service to Residents and Guests during Service Calls to Apartments, Suites, and Public Areas.
- Report deficiencies promptly minimize downtime of HVAC and refrigeration utilities.
- Uphold operations in the absence of the Chief Refrigeration Engineer, acting as division lead where necessary.
- Share responsibilities of Duty Refrigeration Engineer with the Chief Refrigeration Engineer.
- Ensure correct use, care, and maintenance of all tools and equipment.
- Efficiently and safely locate and repair leaks in any Refrigeration Piping System, Reducing overall Refrigerant Losses and additional cost.
- Oversea and participate in regular Stock Counting to ensure correct stock transfers are maintained at all times.
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a sound understanding of the Company Safety Management System.
- Participate actively in all parts of the Engine Department SOP System.
- Fulfil assigned responsibilities within the vessel’s Emergency Plan and Safety Organization.
- Adhere to safe working practices and ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Ready to step in, and cover, all safety related duties as part of the IPM (In Port Manning).
Training & Supervision
- Mentor and guide the Assistant Refrigeration Engineer, supporting their professional development towards a future Engineer role.
- Monitor and verify Assistant Refrigeration Engineer working hours; ensure timesheets are completed and submitted accurately.
Technical Support
Assist the Chief Refrigeration Engineer with:

- Spare parts management, purchasing routines, and maintenance planning.
- Minor maintenance and leak detection on Water Chillers and Screw-Type Provision Compressors.
- Air Handling Unit (AHU) maintenance, including fire/smoke dampers, switches, cooling coils, pipework, and general frequency drive settings.
- Operation and adjustment of refrigeration automation systems to maintain correct food storage temperatures.
- Operation and adjustment of Air Conditioning systems to maintain correct Comfort Level for Residents and Guests.
- To verify and uphold cleanliness of Galley and Laundry Ducting Systems.
- Cleaning and maintenance of Fan Rooms and equipment therein.
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
Maintain and repair the following:

- Stand-alone Air Conditioning units and
- Apartment refrigerators, freezers, and domestic icemakers.
- Galley refrigerators, freezers, and icemakers.
- Provision rooms, including evaporator cleanliness, door/hinge repair, leak detection, and temperature
- Water coolers and dispensers, including filter replacement, general repair, and unit replacement as required.
- Actively participate in the CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) process
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE
- Qualification as Refrigeration Engineer, or at least five years of experience in Maritime Refrigeration and/or Air Conditioning onboard Passenger Vessels.
- Certified in accordance with STCW Regulations VI/1, I/9, I/14, and VI/6.
- Universal EPA Qualification, as well as adequate knowledge of Environmental Protection rules and regulations, as per outlined in The EPA (US), and/or FGAS Regulations (EU).
- An adequate knowledge of The Vessel Sanitation Program, including, but not limited to, USPH and UKPH rules and requirements. This includes the ability to spot hygiene deficiencies in everyday situations, and repair or report as per required.
- Must have basic computer skills – enough to navigate through Windows based programs (Word, Excel etc.) and have the ability to perform basic AMOS Tasks and Issuetrax Work Orders.
- Knowledgeable in standard BMS navigation, able to check, set and alter area set points and investigate malfunctions or Resident requests.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Able to work 7 days a week for a minimum period for extended period of time.
- While performing the essential functions of this job, all team members are required to stand; walk long distances on the ship; use hands to touch, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, taste and smell. All vessel positions require repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and down stairs and lifting up to 23 kilograms. This job requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- All team members must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. All vessel positions require full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
- Assist with zodiac landings, Marina days and Expeditions when required.
- Work within different temperature changes—indoors to outdoors.
- Able to pass basic safety course.
