RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of the Staff Captain will include, but not be limited to the following:

  •  Function as the Masters’ deputy and second in command of the ship.
  • Head of the Deck Department and Senior Leadership Team member.
  • Be well accustomed to the Masters’ duties and be ready to take over the command at any given time.
  • Assist the Master in enforcing proper bridge resource management according to the companies SMS and good maritime practice.
  • Responsible for succession planning within the Deck Department.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the ship at all times.
  • Monitor and ensure crew compliance with safe working practices.
  • Oversees purchasing of consumables and spare parts for Deck Department; in charge of inventory control and processing of purchase orders using the AMOS system.
  • Monitors and manages the M&R budget together with the Chief Engineer. Responsible for updating the 10-year plan for the items related to Deck Department. In charge of creating CAPEX for Deck Department.
  • Ensure that all tendering and boat activities are performed under the highest level of safety and comfort for Residents, Guests and Crew.
  • In charge of the crew discipline on board, including dealing with any kind of misconduct except for work related offences.
  • Oversees all contractors assigned to work for the Deck Department.
  • Ensure time & attendance is practiced according to MLC regulations in the Deck Department.
  • Oversees overtime for deck crew.
  • Work closely with the HSE Officer, Chief Officer and Security Officer in order to ensure the highest standard of safety, security and health for Residents, Guests, Crew.
  • As the head of the Deck Department, overall responsible to maintain the vessel, equipment and appearance to the highest of standards.
  • Ensure that all joining crew members are duly certified according to SOLAS regulations, STCW and company Training Matrix.
  • Together with the shore side senior management, the HSE Officer, Chief Engineer and General Manager participate in the development, review, and implementation of company occupational safety, environmental and public health policies, procedures and The Staff Captain position will share part of the oversight responsibilities, audit, and review operational areas in cooperation with the HSE Officer, General Manager and Chief Engineer.
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Medical Facility.
  • The Staff Captain shall, as the head of Deck Department, at a regular basis perform routine checks to ensure our SMS system is followed in all respects, including ensuring applicable checklists part of a procedure are properly maintained; the Chief Engineer will share this duty by ensuring the procedures are properly followed up in the Engine Department.
  • Responsible for the performance appraisal and goals & objectives process for the Deck Department.
  • Be familiar with the Safety Management System, the Premaster software and have a full understanding of the Safety Organization and on-board emergency coordination and responds.
  • Satisfactorily complete Staff Captain familiarization form (SMP 411-10).

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Qualifications and licenses shall conform with all International and National Conventions & Regulations.
  • Unlimited Masters’ license and extensive experience from passenger vessels.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to work 7 days a week for a minimum period for extended period of time.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, all team members are required to stand; walk long distances on the ship; use hands to touch, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, taste and smell.  All vessel positions require repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and down stairs and lifting up to 23 kilograms.  This job requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • All team members must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. All vessel positions require full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
  • Assist with zodiac landings, Marina days and Expeditions when required.
  • Work within different temperature changes—indoors to outdoors.
  • Able to pass basic safety course.
