POSITION SUMMARY

The Director, Maritime Operations is responsible to further develop and manage the ship’s Safety procedures, compliance, efficiency and energy conservation projects, Dry-dock and capital projects and ensures successful on-time, on-budget delivery of these projects. He/she is responsible for determining project scope, timelines, tracking project progress and measuring outcomes.  Reporting to the VP, Marine & Technical Operations, the Director of Maritime Operations ensures a safe, compliant, sustainable, reliable and efficient operation of the vessel including capital project(s) life span and success.  This position works directly with the shipboard Marine & Technical team, the CEO, CFO, COO and vendors to ensure alignment to strategy, budget and objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Manages day-to-day operational aspects of vessel maritime operations ensuring compliance with company, class and flag regulations as described in valid company Safety Management Systems (SMS) and as it continuously is being developed in compliance with applicable IMO instruments under the ISM code, SOLAS and MARPOL regulations among others.
  • Drives continuous improvement focus and safety culture development of vessel operations and safety aspects under the SMS.
  • Visits the ship regularly to conduct inspections, assessing effectiveness of ship’s Marine & Technical Operations, and forecasting maintenance and improvement needs and managing implementations.
  • Responsible for budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting of the operational budgets and capital projects. Major contributor to ships 10-year capital plan.
  • Works closely with Ship, and Technical Purchasing Department to ensure cost effective sourcing.
  • Maintain business relationship with Regulatory Authorities (Flag States, Port States, Classification Societies and Public Health) and ensure operations are in compliance and communicate variances.
  • Develops key relationships with vendors and contractors; and enforces accountability; negotiates with contractors and vendors.
  • Recommends, develops and implements energy efficiency and environmental sustainability enhancements.
  • Be a mentor for the shipboard team, for new hires and newly promoted personnel.
  • Develops Dry-dock plans and technical specifications in close cooperation with VP Marine & Technical Operations, Shipboard Leadership, external subject matter experts, and legal counsel to facilitate contract management with Dry-dock companies.
  • Review the SEEMP plans on an annual basis and revise as necessary.
  • This position has emergency response duties as defined in the Emergency Manual.
  • Project sponsoring, directing and implementation duties as situation requires.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  •  Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience working within the Marine & Technical aspect of the cruise industry; onboard cruise ship leadership experience and/or “new build” experience highly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marine profession or equivalent.
  • PMP (Project Management Professional) Certification a plus.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely present technical subjects, experience in presenting in front of groups.
  • Strong business/financial acumen and negotiating skills.
  • Proven experience with contract & vendor negotiation.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead people and acquire results through others.
  • Proven efficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task under high pressure & demanding situations.
  • Strong budgetary, projections, and cost control skills.
  • Must be able to travel based on job demands and requirements; flexibility to work extended hours or weekends as needed.
