The responsibilities of the Ship Security Officer will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Head of the Security Guards
  • To maintain training level of Security Supervisor and Security Guards
  • Vessel’s SSO according to ISPS Code
  • Work closely with the HR Manager on crew discipline issues and report any significant issues to the Staff Captain (and Master if so needed)
  • Assist the Staff Captain in maintaining the ships’ key and safe system
  • Assist the Chief Officer with crew safety training as required as well as familiarization of new Residents and Guest’s
  • In charge of following up any accidents, incidents or non-conformities in the absence of Chief Officer
  • To carry out work place safety round weekly of all areas on board
  • Maintain all Fire Fighting equipment according to AMOS
  • Train all Fire Team and Backup team on a monthly basis
  • Carry out the planning and execution of the following drills:
    • Code Charlie
    • Code Papa
    • Code Delta
    • Code Zulu
    • Assist Chief Officer with helicopter and fire drill planning
    • Conduct debrief after drills
    • Inform the Chief Officer when drills are completed for the Chief Officer to log the drills into the logbook
  • Ensure that the gangway procedures are being followed; shall also monitor the shore-side security when the ship has docked in order to have the highest level of security around the vessel at all times
  • Carry out frequent rounds in Crew, Service and Public areas
  • Monitor the night security and report any issues to the Staff Captain; prepares a “Daily Report log” on significant events from the gangway and night patrol is to be maintained
  • Maintain the security log
  • Set up a working schedule (together with the Security Supervisor) for the Security Guards;
  • Ensure the Security Guards (and other relevant crew) are duly trained in accordance to ISPS, company standards etc.
  • Carry out all necessary functions detailed in the SSP
  • Ship Security Officer Familiarization form
  • It is the responsibility of every crewmember to perform duties according to the Superior Officer’s instruction; the work should be carried out in a safe and professional manner, in order to keep the ship’s equipment at the highest level of safe operating condition
  • Have an understanding of the Safety Management System, including his responsibilities in the Safety Organization as per the Emergency Plan; must have an excellent understanding of the Ship security plan and company Code of conduct

Qualifications, Education & Experience

  • Maritime background with at least two years seagoing experience
  • To hold the ships security officers certificate
  • Well-trained in spotting drug abuse & trafficking, interview techniques, anti-terrorist measures, investigating criminal acts, firefighting and accident prevention methods
  • Thorough knowledge of the ISPS Code
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

Physical Requirements

  • Able to work 7 days a week for a minimum period for extended period of time.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, all team members are required to stand; walk long distances on the ship; use hands to touch, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, taste and smell.  All vessel positions require repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and down stairs and lifting up to 23 kilograms.  This job requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • All team members must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving procedures and drills. All vessel positions require full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
  • Assist with zodiac landings, Marina days and Expeditions when required.
  • Work within different temperature changes—indoors to outdoors.
  • Able to pass basic safety course.
